Northeast Argentina - Buenas Aires to Iguazu

Eastern Argentina gives birders the chance to experience a variety of biomes, from the open grasslands of the Pampas to the lush Atlantic Forest in the north. This trip has birding time devoted to marshes, savannas, subtropical grasslands, palm groves and monkey puzzle (Araucaria) forests. A sample of some key birds that can bee seen not far from Buenos Aires are Straight- and Curve-billed Reedhaunters, Xenopsaris, Southern Screamer and Firewood Gatherer. The endangered Saffron-cowled Blackbird and a number of rare seedeaters are also a possibility as we enter the Iberá marshes, home of the stunning Strange-tailed Tyrant, Sharp-tailed Grass-Tyrant, Black and White Monjita, Yellow-rumped Marshbird, White-headed Marsh-Tyrant and Streamer-tailed Tyrant.

As we approach the forests of Misiones province we look for many of the 400+ bird species that occur there. A number of colorful toucans, parrots and tanagers keep us entertained while we look for the rare and skulking White-bearded Antshrike, Canebrake Groundcreeper, Vinaceous-breasted Amazon, Helmeted Woodpecker, Long-trained Nightjar, Rufous Gnateater and Mouse-colored Tapaculo. A must see when traveling to this region is undoubtedly the mighty Iguazú falls. Unparalleled in beauty and scenery, this National Park is home to the Great Dusky Swift, Robust and Blond-crested Woodpeckers, Violet-capped Woodnymph and the now rare and local Black-fronted Piping-Guan. Our trip ends in the very convenient Yacutinga Lodge, which is a perfect spot to look for the more elusive antbirds, antwrens and nocturnal species.
