Southern Argentina - The Pampas and Northern Patagonia

This tour provides the most comprehensive coverage of areas that are seldom visited by birding trips, and the best chances to find their specialties. The flatlands of the Pampas are the quintessence of Argentina. They are covered by grasslands that support cattle and agriculture, and by wetlands that hold a rich bird life year-round. This trip will take you to look for special birds such as the localized Pampas Meadowlark and Chaco Pipit (two species virtually never covered by birding trips), as well as Bay-capped Wren-Spinetail and the reed-bed specialists Wren-like Rushbird and Many-colored Rush-Tyrant. Large numbers of water birds are found here, including coots, ducks, grebes, herons and storks. The local Black-headed Duck and the elegant Black-necked Swan are also found.

South of here are the Monte brushlands, home to most of Argentina's endemic bird species. Sandy Gallito, White-throated Cacholote, Cinnamon Warbling-Finch and Carbonated Sierra-Finch are the most prominent, together with the endangered Yellow Cardinal, and Crested Gallito, Black-crowned Monjita and Hudson's Black-Tyrant. Further south the landscape becomes an arid steppe, home to Darwin's Rhea, Rusty-backed Monjita, Guanacos and Patagonian hare. The tour ends at the mythical Valdes Peninsula and the massive Magellanic Penguin colony at Punta Tombo.

This tour can be combined with Southern Patagonia & Tierra del Fuego. tour and other destinations.

Day 1:

12:30 Our guide will meet the group at the hotel lobby for a welcome lunch. 14:30 Afternoon excursion to Costanera Sur Nature Reserve marshes, located by the Rio de la Plata and a few minutes from downtown Buenos Aires. (Participants will have a room booked in Buenos Aires for a noontime Check-in. Transfer from airport is at everyone's expense and can be requested separately).

Day 2:
After breakfast we board our minibus and drive through the pampas towards San Clemente. These world known plains are dotted with grasslands, marshes, lagoons and some woods. Birds abound and are easy to find as we make several stops on the way, before arriving to the hotel for lunch. In the afternoon we explore Punta Rasa, a sandy peninsula that stretches into the Atlantic Ocean, separating it from the mudflats of the Plata River estuary. We will look for waders and several birds typical of the Pampas grasslands.

Day 3:
Return to Buenos Aires and fly to Bahia Blanca. Near town we will find a mix of habitats, with mudflats, dry Pampas and "Espinal" woods, home of several birds with a localized range.

Day 4:
After exploring the surroundings of Bahia Blanca, the journey continues as we drive towards San Antonio Oeste, birding en route.

Day 5:

The arid "Monte" is an endemic biome in Argentina, and dominates the San Antonio area. Here we will look for the bird specialties and endemics of the brushy scrubland.

Day 6:

The trip continues driving south, and as the landscape of bushes changes gradually into the steppes of Patagonia we reach Puerto Madryn. In the afternoon, we go birding near town.

Day 7:

Today we will go to Peninsula Valdes, this time on a full day trip, which will allow us to appreciate this wonderful site more intimately. An abundant and tame marine life competes with the grace and beauty of Guanacos and Darwin's Rheas that graze in groups.

Day 8:

Early in the morning we depart to Punta Tombo, a rocky beach with the largest colony of Magellanic Penguins in the world. Our day ends in Trelew, perhaps with a visit to a local wetland that hosts a variety of wildfowl.

Day 9:

Continue to El Calafate to connect with Southern Argentina Part II, or fly to Buenos Aires, where the tour ends. (Transfer from domestic airport to town or international airport upon request).
