Southern Argentina - Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego

The vast plains of Patagonia have caught the imagination of naturalists since the earliest times of exploration. Nowadays world birders are equally fascinated by these scenic landscapes and their special birds.

Santa Cruz province is famed for its windswept and barren plateaus. These are home to a number of bird species that are local and highly sought after. Among these can be mentioned the endangered Hooded Grebe and the recently rediscovered Austral Rail. Other special birds of the area are the Patagonian Tinamou, Ruddy-headed Goose, Austral Canastero and Magellanic Plover.

The island of Tierra del Fuego will provide a perfect contrast, for here we will visit the dense Southern Beech forests, home to Austral Pygmy-Owl, Thorn-tailed Rayadito, White-throated Treerunner and the fabulous Magellanic Woodpecker. Water birds occur here and some specialties are the Spectacled Duck, Ashy-headed Goose, Fuegian Steamer-Duck, Dolphin Gull and Chilean Skua. The trip will finish up with a visit to the high timberline habitats where Yellow-bridled Finch and White-throated Caracara occur.

These areas combine some of the most interesting birds of Argentina with breathtaking countryside, making of this a wonderful birding trip. This tour can be combined with our "Pampas and Northern Patagonia" tour and other destinations. This tour can be combined with Pampas and Northern Patagonia. tour and other destinations.

Day 1:

Fly to El Calafate and drive to the village of El Chaltén. Having the Fitz Roy and Torre peaks as a background, we will spend the afternoon birding on the extensive Southern Beech woodlands near town.Participants coming on Part I of Southern Argentina tour will fly from Trelew. Those who start in Buenos Aires must request an additional night there.

Day 2:
After a morning exploring El Chaltén, our trip continues as we drive towards the Strobel plateau. This remote place is seldom visited by tourists, and it is the most reliable site to find the much sought after Hooded Grebe.

Day 3:
Today we will search for grebes on the lagoons near the estancia where we stay at. The marshes and reeds of the Rio Chico will give us chances for another specialty: the Austral Rail. In the afternoon, we leave the plateau and drive to the Atlantic coast, looking for Patagonian Tinamous on the way.

Day 4:
Early in the morning we visit a reserve near Piedra Buena and get a second chance for the tinamou, and then drive towards Rio Gallegos.

Day 5:

Today we go out on an excursion to the magellanic steppes near Rio Gallegos until an evening flight takes us to Ushuaia.

Day 6:

Now in the island of Tierra del Fuego we will dedicate our time to explore the Southern Beech forests of Tierra del Fuego National Park.

Day 7:

Today we will go to Le Martial Glacier, above the timberline near Ushuaia, looking for the specialties of the mountain tops. Returning to Ushuaia, we'll explore the Ushuaia harbor to see some coastal birds and you will also have some free time for sightseeing or taking an optional excursion.
