 Emas National Park

On the north-eastern border of the Pantanal lies Emas National Park. The successions of natural fires combined with the wet and dry seasons, seasonal marshes and streams result in a great diversity of microhabitats among open grasslands, cerrado savannah and gallery forests and the corresponding variety of avifauna bears testament to this. Complimenting the bird diversity is arguably the greatest variety of mammal species on the continent. A feature of this landscape is the large number of termite mounds providing both perches and food sources for a number of species. Often likened to the African savannahs for its landscapes and ease of wildlife viewing, the terrain of the Emas National Park promises a varied and productive birding experience.

Day 1 - 6:

Giant Anteater - Fred TavaresToday we fly to Cuiaba from Sao Paulo or Alta Floresta if coming from the Amazon Tour, and drive to Emas National Park for a six night stay. Emas National Park encompasses a rich mosaic of exotic landscapes, each sheltering its own unique flora and fauna and represents a true gem in the Brazilian park system. Exploring the many microhabitats takes time and we shall enjoy our time searching for birds and mammals. The recently rediscovered Cone-billed Tanager is here along with the striking Helmeted Manakin, rare Great-billed Seed-Finch, the rarely seen Planalto Foliage-gleaner and up to 220 others. Graceful Long-winged Harriers quarter over the golden grasslands, while below them the comical but lovely male Cock-tailed Tyrants display above the tall grass. The rarely seen Bearded Tachuri is quite common here as is Black-masked Finch and Lesser Nothura. In the gallery woodlands Blue-and-yellow Macaws, the nomadic Yellow-faced Parrot and commoner Turquoise-fronted Parrots are easily seen. We should see Yellow-billed Blue Finch, Rufous-sided Pygmy-Tyrant, Horned Sungem and many other species seen only with difficulty elsewhere. The mammals are exceptional, including Maned Wolf, Giant Anteater, Brazilian tapir, both hoary and crab-eating foxes, and White-lipped peccaries and Puma. The big avian targets are the rare White-winged Nightjar and Giant Snipe which we have a good chance of seeing. Nights Chapada do Ceu.
